Cold Pressing Without a Press
A blender and a straining bag make genuinely good juice for almost nothing, and it is the honest way to find out whether you want a machine at all.

Before spending real money on a machine, there is a method that produces genuinely good juice using a blender you probably already own and a straining bag costing very little.
It is not a compromise version. Blending and straining is close to what a hydraulic press does, in a different order: break the cell structure completely, then separate the liquid. The results are excellent, the yield is high, and the whole setup costs a fraction of any juicer on this site.
It is also the honest way to answer the question that matters most, which is whether you will actually keep doing this. The juicing hub sets out what a good glass contains before you decide how to make it.
What you need
A blender. Any reasonable one. A high powered machine such as a Vitamix 5200 does this better, since complete cell rupture is what determines yield, and an ordinary jug blender does it perfectly well with produce cut smaller and a little more patience.
A straining bag. a fine mesh straining bag is the tool, sold for nut milk and equally suited to this. Nylon mesh is stronger than cheesecloth, squeezes harder without tearing, and rinses clean in seconds. Buy a set with more than one size.
A large bowl that the bag can sit in comfortably.
That is the entire kit. Everything else is technique.
The method
Cut everything small. Smaller than you would for a juicer. A blender works by circulation, and large chunks bounce rather than blend.
Load the blender in the right order. Soft and wet at the bottom, hard at the top. Cucumber and celery first, then carrot and cabbage. This gives the blades something to bite immediately and gets the vortex started.
Add water, but not much. About a quarter cup for a full jug. This is the one real compromise of the method, since it dilutes the result slightly. Add the minimum that lets the blender circulate, and add it a splash at a time rather than all at once. Watery produce like cucumber may need none at all.
Blend until completely smooth. Longer than feels necessary. Any texture remaining is cell structure that has not been broken, and every unbroken cell is juice you will not recover. Sixty to ninety seconds is typical.
Pour into the bag over the bowl. Fill it no more than two thirds, since you need room to twist the top.
Twist and squeeze, firmly and slowly. Gather the top, twist it closed, and work the pulp with your other hand from the top downward. Slow steady pressure extracts far more than fast squeezing. Keep going past the point where it seems finished, because the last third of the yield comes out in the last thirty seconds of effort.
Scrape and repeat if needed. For large batches, do it in two loads rather than overfilling one.
The whole process takes about six minutes, which is longer than a juicer and shorter than most people expect.
How it compares
Yield is genuinely competitive. Complete blending followed by hard squeezing extracts very well, often better than a centrifugal machine and close to a masticating one on soft produce. On cabbage and hard greens the machines pull ahead.
Oxidation is worse. A blender beats a great deal of air into the mixture at high speed. Juice made this way is best drunk immediately and does not hold like properly stored masticating juice. Treat the two hour rule as one hour here.
Cleaning is easier than you would think. A blender jug rinses in seconds. The bag turns inside out and rinses under the tap, then air dries. Total time is comparable to a juicer and involves no fine screen.
It is messier. Squeezing a bag of wet pulp by hand over a bowl is exactly as untidy as it sounds. This is the honest drawback and the main reason people eventually buy a machine.
Your hands do the work. For a single glass this is fine. For three portions it becomes a genuine effort, and hand strength is a real constraint for some people.
What it does well and badly
Excellent for cucumber, celery, tomato, watermelon, citrus flesh, apple, and soft fruit. Anything with high water content and a soft structure gives up its liquid readily once blended.
Good for carrot and beetroot, provided you cut them small and blend thoroughly. A weaker blender will struggle.
Poor for cabbage, kale, and hard fibrous greens. These need cutting very small and blend into a mass that resists straining. Possible, but this is where a masticating machine earns its price.
Impossible for wheatgrass. Grass wraps around blender blades rather than breaking down.
A bonus use. The same equipment makes nut milk, oat milk, and cold brew coffee, which a juicer cannot do. If you are buying a bag anyway, it earns its keep three ways.
Cleaning the bag properly
The bag is the only part of this method that fails if neglected, and keeping it in good condition takes under a minute.
Turn it inside out immediately. Pulp trapped in the mesh dries within minutes and then has to be worked out fibre by fibre. Inverting the bag puts the pulp on the outside where water can reach it.
Rinse under a strong tap, from the clean side. Push the water through the mesh outward, the same principle that works on a juicer screen. Rinsing from the pulp side drives fragments deeper into the weave.
Rub the mesh gently against itself rather than scrubbing with a brush. Nylon mesh is strong under tension and vulnerable to abrasion.
Air dry fully, hanging. A damp bag folded in a drawer develops a smell quickly and can pick up mould in the seams. Most bags have a drawstring long enough to hang from a hook.
Wash properly once a week in hot water with a little washing up liquid, then rinse very thoroughly. Detergent residue in the mesh transfers to the next batch.
Bags stain, particularly with beetroot and carrot. Staining is cosmetic and does not affect performance. Replace a bag when the mesh starts to stretch or the seams weaken, not when it stops looking new.
Owning two or three means one is always dry and ready, which removes the only real friction in the routine.
Using it as a decision tool
This is the argument for trying the method before shopping.
Run it for two weeks. Make the glass you think you want, at the frequency you think you will manage, using equipment that costs almost nothing.
At the end you will know three things that no review can tell you. Whether you actually drink it, or whether the enthusiasm faded on day four. Which produce you reach for, which determines whether you need a machine that handles greens. And whether the daily effort fits your morning, which is the thing that decides everything.
If you drop it in week one, you have saved a considerable amount of money and learned something true. If you are still going at week three, you know exactly which machine to buy and why, and juice or smoothie will confirm which category you are actually in.
Very few people regret this fortnight. A fair number regret the machine they bought without it.
When to graduate
Three signals that the method has done its job.
You are making more than one portion at a time. Hand squeezing scales badly, and this is usually the first thing that pushes people to a machine.
You want cabbage or hard greens in the glass. The blender genuinely cannot do this well, and it is the clearest capability gap.
The mess has become the reason you skip mornings. A juicer is tidier, and that alone justifies it once the habit is established.
Until one of those applies, the blender and bag are not a stopgap. They are a legitimate way to make juice that a lot of people use permanently.

The cost gap is the whole point. Two weeks with a straining bag answers a question that costs a great deal more to answer any other way.
WHAT GOES WRONG
Watery juice. Too much water added. Start with a splash and add only what the blender needs to circulate.
Poor yield. Under blending, or squeezing too fast. Blend until completely smooth and squeeze slowly.
A torn bag. Overfilled, or cheesecloth rather than nylon. Fill to two thirds and use a proper mesh bag.
Gritty juice. Mesh too coarse, or the bag was not fully closed at the top and pulp escaped past the twist.
Aching hands. Doing three portions in one squeeze. Split it into two loads, or accept that this is the signal to buy a machine.

- Cut a cucumber, three celery sticks, and a green apple small, and load soft produce at the bottom of the blender.
- Add a splash of water, no more, and blend for a full ninety seconds until completely smooth.
- Pour into a straining bag over a bowl, fill it two thirds, twist the top, and squeeze slowly from the top down for a full minute.
- Drink it within the hour, and run this for two weeks before buying any machine at all.
