Keeping a Mill Working
Most mill problems are one of four things: damp grain, the wrong material, a setting that drifted, or a mill that was never cleaned.

A grain mill is a simple machine and it fails in predictable ways. Almost every problem traces to one of four causes: grain that was too damp, material the mill was never rated for, a setting that drifted, or residue that was never cleaned out.
None of those requires a technician. This page covers the routine, the adjustments, and what the noises mean.

The routine
Short, and it matters more than any single repair.
Run the mill empty for a few seconds at the start of a session if it has been standing. This clears loose residue from the last run before it joins your fresh flour.
Brush out after each use. A soft brush and a few seconds. Flour left in a chamber absorbs humidity, cakes, and eventually affects both flavour and mechanism.
Do not wash anything unless the manual says you can. Water in a grinding chamber causes rust in steel mills and can crack stones. Most mills are brushed clean and never washed.
Empty the hopper between sessions if you are not milling again soon. Grain sitting in a hopper attracts pests and absorbs moisture.
Let it cool between long runs. Motors in home mills are not rated for continuous operation. If you are milling several kilograms, work in stages.
Store it covered if it lives on a counter, since dust and kitchen grease both find their way into machinery.
Cleaning between grains
Flour carries flavour, and mills retain it.
Mill a small quantity of rice and discard it. This is the standard scouring technique and it works well.
Do this before anything delicate rather than after something assertive. Buckwheat, rye, and quinoa all leave a signature.
Order your session sensibly. Mild before strong, wheat before buckwheat, and anything gluten free before anything containing gluten if that matters in your household.
Brush the chute and the outlet, which are the parts most often missed and where flour packs hardest.

Adjusting a burr mill
Burr mills have a gap you set, and it drifts.
Find zero first. With the mill running and empty, close the burrs slowly until they just begin to touch, then back off immediately. That contact point is your reference. Never run burrs in contact under load.
Set from zero, not from the last position. Markings on a dial wander over time and the contact point does not.
Adjust while running, never while stopped, on most designs. Check your manual, since a few work the other way.
Fine flour usually wants two passes. Set moderately fine, mill, then reset finer and mill again. One aggressive pass strains the mill and often gives a worse result than two gentle ones.
Expect drift. Vibration moves settings over a session. If flour is coarsening as you go, that is why.
Burrs wear. Steel burrs dull gradually and eventually produce coarse flour no adjustment fixes. They are usually replaceable and this is a normal service item rather than a fault.
Stone mills
Stones need occasional attention and it is infrequent enough that people forget it exists.
Dressing means re-roughening the grinding surfaces, which wear smooth with use. A smooth stone crushes rather than shears and produces poor flour. Dressing is done with a specific tool or technique depending on the mill, and the manual is the authority.
Never run stones dry and in contact. They generate heat and can glaze or crack.
Never put anything oily through them. Oil clogs the pores of the stone and is very difficult to remove. This is the most common way home stone mills are ruined.
Clean by milling rice, as with burrs.
Store dry. Damp stones can crack in a cold room.
A well treated set of stones lasts a very long time. A set that has had oily seeds through it may never grind properly again.
Impact mills
Fewer wearing parts and two specific failure modes.
Clogging from damp or oily material. The chamber packs with a paste that has to be dismantled and scraped out. Prevention is the whole cure: dry grain only, and nothing the mill is not rated for.
Fin wear over many years. The stainless fins that do the shattering dull slowly. This is a long term service item.
They run hot, by design. Flour coming off warm is normal and not a fault. Let it cool before mixing.
They are loud. Also normal.
Do not open while running and do not reach into the chamber without unplugging, which sounds obvious and is worth saying because the chamber is dark and the fins are not visible.
Reading the noises
A mill tells you what is wrong if you listen.
Rising pitch under load means it is working harder than it should. Feed slower, or the setting is too fine.
Grinding or scraping on a burr mill usually means burrs in contact. Stop and back off the setting.
A rattle is often something foreign in the grain. Stones and debris do occur in bulk agricultural products.
Labouring, then stalling means overload. Clear it, check the material, and feed more slowly.
A new bearing whine is a genuine mechanical problem and worth addressing before it becomes a seized motor.
Silence with the motor running means the grain is not reaching the burrs. Check the hopper is not bridged, which happens when grain arches over the opening.
Troubleshooting
Flour too coarse. Setting drifted, burrs worn, or a second pass needed.
Flour inconsistent within a batch. Feed rate uneven, or setting drifting under vibration.
Mill stalls under load. Setting too fine for one pass, feeding too fast, or material it cannot handle.
Nothing comes out. Hopper bridged, or a clog. Stop and check rather than forcing it.
Flour smells wrong. Old residue in the chamber, or grain that was already off.
Excessive heat. Setting very fine, long continuous run, or an impact mill doing what impact mills do.
Rust on steel parts. Washed when it should have been brushed, or stored damp.
Most of these are settings or material rather than faults, which is worth remembering before concluding a mill is broken.
Parts and lifespan
Keep the manual. Burr gaps, dressing procedures, and rated materials are all model specific, and general advice cannot replace it.
Check parts availability before buying, particularly used. A discontinued mill with a cracked hopper is scrap, as the mill choosing guide notes.
Burrs and stones are consumables on a very long timescale. Budget for them the way you would for any wearing part.
Motors are usually the end. When a motor goes on a home mill, replacement is often uneconomic.
A well kept mill lasts decades. The failures that end them early are almost always oily material, damp grain, or water where it should not have been.
Foreign objects and what they do
Bulk agricultural grain occasionally contains things that are not grain, and knowing what to expect prevents a startling noise from becoming damage.
Small stones are the classic. Modern cleaning and laser sorting have made this rare, and it still happens. A stone through a burr mill can chip a burr; through an impact mill it usually makes an alarming noise and passes.
Metal fragments are very rare and genuinely damaging. Some serious millers pass grain over a magnet before milling, which takes seconds.
Chaff and straw are harmless and common. They pass through and end up in the flour as small dark flecks.
Insect debris in badly stored grain. Not a mill problem so much as a grain problem, and the storage guide covers prevention.
Unpopped corn kernels in a mill not rated for corn are hard enough to stall or damage some designs.
Two practical habits. Tip grain from the sack into the hopper through your fingers rather than pouring blind, which catches most of what matters. And stop immediately at any unusual noise rather than pushing through, since a stone that is stalling a mill is doing less damage than a stone being forced.

WHAT GOES WRONG
A clogged chamber. Damp or oily material. The most common serious problem and entirely preventable.
Glazed or clogged stones. Something oily. Often terminal for the stones.
Rust inside a steel mill. Washed rather than brushed.
Coarse flour that no setting fixes. Worn burrs or smooth stones.
A bridged hopper. Grain arching over the opening. Tap the side.
Overheating on a long run. Work in stages and let it cool.
A used mill that never worked properly. Previous owner put something through it that it was not rated for.
